Sabrina is about to celebrate her 16th birthday with an unholy baptism where she’ll become a full witch and have to leave her normal life behind.
At the center of the show is the character Sabrina Spellman, played by Kieman Shipka. Kieman portrays Sabrina with absolute charm. It’s an endearing performance, earnest and maybe a bit naive. I feel like I would watch this actor do anything.
The tone of the show needs work. The show jumps between horror, drama, romance and comedy. Sometimes the show is effortless in managing its tone. Sometimes it struggles. Where it stumbles the most is when it combines horror and comedy or transitions between horror and comedy. It’s hard to maintain a suspension of disbelief when the show doesn’t maintain its tone as well as it could.
Sabrina shares a lot of moments on screen with her mortal boyfriend Harvey Kinkle, played by Ross Lynch. Probably the most unbelievable part of the show is when Sabrina tells Harvey that she loves him. I believe her but I just don’t understand why. Where Sabrina is charming, Harvey is beyond boring. I don’t care if this relationship works out. I don’t care what happens to Harvey. By the end of the season, I was slightly turned around on Harvey but not by much. I’m much more interested in Sabrina’s friends and family. Every one of them brings something special to the show.« « Suspiria | Blindspotting » »
