The official soundtrack to the 2015 hit musical Hamilton tells the story of one of America’s founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton.

The Good

Hamilton is an accessible, biographical musical that takes a convoluted topic and delivers an inspired, hip-hop tinged take on a somewhat forgotten historical icon. There’s a lot to take away from Hamilton. Most notable are the tracks “Cabinet Battle #1” and “Cabinet Battle #2”, two cabinet meetings presented as rap battles between Alexander Hamilton and his opponents.

The Bad

Because this is the soundtrack to the musical, there’s a big component missing here. This music was meant to be performed on a stage. The magic isn’t completely lost with the soundtrack but you do get the feeling that you’re missing out.

The Ugly

Hamilton is a sprawling biography. It hits all the big moments of Alexander Hamilton’s life. It’s not a bad thing, necessarily. It’s what you expect. In that way, it’s like most other biographies. However, while Hamilton is not a completely pointed story it’s certainly a poignant one.
