Director: David Gelb

Overall Rating: Ugly

A group of medical students attempting to make a life-saving, scientific breakthrough, use their untested methods to bring back one of their colleagues from the dead.

The Good

The Lazarus Effect is a solid movie from director David Gelb, whose credits also include Jiro Dreams of Sushi. The most notable part of The Lazarus Effect is the cast, which includes Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Sarah Bolger, Evan Peters and Donald Glover. Just as this is a solid movie, these are also solid performances. Not great. But good. Solid. Everything about this movie is solid.

The Bad

There is a bit of a twist with what the medical student’s experiments bring about when they revive Olivia Wilde’s character back to life. But, more or less, you can guess what’s going to happen here. There’s not much in the way of fresh story telling here.

The Ugly

It would have been nice if there were more character development for Olivia Wilde’s character, mostly in terms of what happens to her after she’s brought back to life.
