The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened?

Release Date: July 9, 2015

Director: Jon Schnepp

Overall Rating: Good

The Death of ‘Superman Lives’: What Happened? delves behind the scenes of the nearly produced 1998 movie Superman Lives that would have been directed by Tim Burton and starred Nicolas Cage.

The Good

This seems like a story that wouldn’t have a lot of meat to it but, as it turns out, there’s quite a few twists and turns that director John Schnepp uncovers in his documentary. The story is broken down for us by some interesting players, including Tim Burton, Kevin Smith and Dan Gilroy. There are also plenty of other folks here who worked on different aspects of the production until it was canned.

The Bad

There are some great interview subjects here but, occasionally, the production of the interviews feel a bit amateurish. The lighting and the sound are all over the place, making the interviews quite distracting.

The Ugly

“The Death of ‘Superman Lives’: What Happened?” is a terrible title. What happened to this title? Why not just call it “The Death of Superman Lives”? The audience understands that the movie is going to explain what happened?
