There have been four waves of attacks on Earth by aliens. Cassie (Chloë Grace Moretz) tries to protect her younger brother as the 5th wave imminently approaches.
Cassie’s dad (Ron Livingston) is good in his brief amount of screen time. Liev Schrieber is mostly solid as well. At worse he adds a bit of gravitas to the goings on. Unfortunately there are only a few moments where Chloë Grace Moretz shines but there are those moments.
They call the aliens “The Others”. It’s a great name. Unfortunately it was already famously used in the show Lost. This is just a taste of the derivative nature of The 5th Wave. While it’s entertaining at moments, there isn’t much of anything new. Nothing to make this worthwhile.
The conceit of The 5th Wave is interesting. It’s about surviving several calculated attacks from an alien force who are using the world to destroy its inhabitants by way of floods and airborne disease. That could make for an interesting movie. This, however, is not very interesting. It breezes through anything it has going for it to get to the more ridiculous aspects it has in store.« « Goosed | Get a Job » »
