Strange Brew

Posted on February 13, 2016 by James Shults

Release Date: August 26, 1983

Director: Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas

Overall Rating: Good

Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas play Bob and Doug McKenzie, two dimwitted, beer guzzling brothers who get caught up in an evil brew meister’s plot to control the World.

The Good

Strange Brew serves up two fun characters who deliver great joke setups and payoffs throughout. It’s completely absurd but super fun. Strange Brew also includes a perfectly placed intermission.

The Bad

For a 1986 screwball comedy, Strange Brew has quite a few special effects. Unfortunately the effects don’t hold up. It’s doubtful they were very good at the time of the movie’s release. They are, however, easy to overlook, as the poor effects add to the humor of the movie.

The Ugly

SPOILERS: Strange Brew moves from absurd to insane. As it turns out, Bob and Doug McKenzie’s dog, Hosehead, has super powers. That’s helpful. The unfortunate part about this is that the McKenzie brothers don’t save the day but, rather, their dog does. It’s not a terrible ending. It’s just conveniently absurd.
